Pokemon: Win or Fail? 94-110

  • Name: Kaburumo
  • Number: 094
  • Type: Bug
  • Species: Ringside Pokemon (?)
  • Looks like: a larva with a wrench head
  • Awesome factor: 4/10
  • Trivia: This Pokemon will evolve only if you trade it for Chobomaki, another bug Pokemon.
Another kind of cute little guy. He looks like an excited baby bug. Not sure why the the top of his head looks like a wrench, though. It's a bit strange, but overall descent design.
MEH

  • Name: Shubarugo
  • Number: 095
  • Type: Bug/Steel
  • Species: Cavalry Pokemon
  • Looks like: a knight bug with jousts for arms
  • Awesome factor: 8/10
  • Trivia: It has the highest base attack of all bug Pokemon and is tied for the highest base attack of steel type Pokemon.
If you look closely, you can see a form of Kaburumo inside all that armor. This is a pretty badass bug Pokemon. He looks like a knight and has freaking jousts for arms! His bug/steel typing means he only has a weakness to fire (though fire attacks will do 4x normal damage, so it is a strong weakness), is resistant to more than half of the other Pokemon types, and takes no damage from poison types. His speed stat, though, is abysmal which makes sense when you notice he has no legs. Seriously, he's balancing on that little nub. How does he manage?
WIN

  • Name: Tamagetake
  • Number: 096
  • Type: Grass/Poison
  • Species: Mushroom Pokemon
  • Looks like: a mushroom with a pokeball on it
  • Awesome factor: 1/10
  • Trivia: It lures in people because it disguised as a pokeball (no way!) and then releases toxic spores.
They already had voltorb and electrode, did they really need to make this guy look like a pokeball? Seriously. Those two were stupid enough, but now we've got this failure? It would simply be an average looking mushroom Pokemon if it wasn't for the pokeball pattern.
FAIL

  • Name: Morobareru
  • Number: 097
  • Type: Grass/Poison
  • Species: Mushroom Pokemon
  • Looks like: a completely original and well though-out Pokemon. Wait, no it doesn't!
  • Awesome factor: 1/10
  • Trivia: It has the highest HP of all grass and poison types.
"Hey, how do we evolve this pokeball mushroom guy?"
"Duh, I dunno... add more pokeballs?"
"That's a great idea!"
"Hurf durf!"
"Duh-hur!"
FAIL

  • Name: Pururia
  • Number: 098
  • Type: Water/Ghost
  • Species: Floating Pokemon
  • Looks like: a jellyfish and a blueberry
  • Awesome factor: 5/10
  • Trivia: It lives in the deepest depths of the ocean where it drags its prey after it poisons it. It and its evolution are the only Pokemon with this type combo. The look of the male and female differ. (male pictured)
A water ghost? Well that's certainly interesting. The design looks like a fairly standard jellyfish except with a bulbous head that reminds me of a berry. Despite living in the depths of the ocean, it can simply float around on land (hence "floating Pokemon"). The male has a bit of a worrisome expression and it looks like its wearing a Baroque-era frilly neckpiece. The female is pink, looks happy-go-lucky, and has the appearance of a pearl necklace around her neck.
WIN

  • Name: Burungel
  • Number: 099
  • Type: Water/Ghost
  • Species: Floating Pokemon
  • Looks like: a royal jellyfish
  • Awesome factor: 7/10
  • Trivia: Possibly the creepiest factoid yet: "Its favorite food is known to be life energy."
I like this design better than the first one. The male now looks like he has the Mayor of Townsville's mustache and a crown on his head. The gigantic "head" is now the focus with the extremities being downplayed more. The female, likewise, looks like royalty with a crown and a big pouffy bit around her head. Curiously, only the female's mouth is visible any more.
WIN

  • Name: Mamanbou
  • Number: 100
  • Type: Water
  • Species: Nursing Pokemon
  • Looks like: a heart-shaped fish
  • Awesome factor: 1/10
  • Trivia: It has healing powers and can heal other Pokemon. It has the highest HP stat of non-evolving water Pokemon, the second highest of water Pokemon overall, and the fifth highest of all Pokemon.
First of all, no this Pokemon is not related to luvdisk (although it really, really looks like it should be). Second, it's got a very boring design. It looks vaguely heart shaped and has giant fins on the top and bottom of its body that look vaguely like hands. Quite ugly, if you ask me.
FAIL

  • Name: Bachuru
  • Number: 101
  • Type: Bug/Electric
  • Species: Clinging Pokemon
  • Looks like: an adorable fuzzy spider
  • Awesome factor: 7/10
  • Trivia: It clings to other Pokemon to collect static electricity and stores it in a special pouch. It is the smallest Pokemon ever at only 10cm tall. No other Pokemon has the same type combo as it and its evolution.
Just look at this guy! I'd give him a big 'ol hug if it wouldn't kill him. I like the interesting type combination, but I wonder how effective he is in battle being that small.
WIN

  • Name: Denchura
  • Number: 102
  • Type: Bug/Electric
  • Species: Electric Spider Pokemon
  • Looks like: a fuzzy spider
  • Awesome factor: 8/10
  • Trivia: It produces electric threads that can electrocute prey.
This guy is still pretty cute, especially for a spider. He still doesn't have the correct number of legs, but I'm not complaining. I think I like these guys better than spinarak and his family.
WIN

  • Name: Tesshido
  • Number: 103
  • Type: Grass/Steel
  • Species: Thorny Leech Pokemon
  • Looks like: a deadly Easter egg
  • Awesome factor: 3/10
  • Trivia: It is both the slowest grass Pokemon and the slowest steel Pokemon. No other Pokemon has the same type cobo as it and its family. It lives in caves and eats minerals.
This thing is kind of stupid. It looks like the end of a flail or something. It's type combo makes it resistant to 10 other Pokemon types and it is completely unaffected by poison. Now that I think about it, it's not really any worse than pineco, which is also an extremely stupid Pokemon that we've come to accept.
MEH

  • Name: Nattorei
  • Number: 104
  • Type: Grass/Steel
  • Species: Thorny Ball Pokemon
  • Looks like: a naval mine
  • Awesome factor: 5/10
  • Trivia: It uses those spiked appendages to attach to cave ceilings where it shoots spikes at its prey below. It has the highest base defense of all grass types.
All they had to do was flatten this guy out and change the spikes from green to silver and he already looks better. I refuse to believe, though, that this guy is based on a seed (as is his pre-evolution). I think his sprite actually does him more justice than that picture. Viewed from that angle, I like him a bit better.
WIN

  • Name: Gear (yes, that is the Japanese name)
  • Number: 105
  • Type: Steel
  • Species: Gear Pokemon
  • Looks like: two metal gears
  • Awesome factor: 1/10
  • Trivia: Gear and its family are the only pure steel types related by evolution.
To be fair, this is just as creative as two magnets, three screws, and a metal ball
FAIL

  • Name: Gigear
  • Number: 106
  • Type: Steel
  • Species: Gear Pokemon
  • Looks like: three metal gears!
  • Awesome factor: 1/10
  • Trivia: It flings tiny gears at high speed.
They added a third, larger gear. Hooray?
FAIL

  • Name: Gigigear
  • Number: 107
  • Type: Steel
  • Species: Gear Pokemon
  • Looks like: four metal gears and a what the hell is that thing?
  • Awesome factor: 0/10
  • Trivia: It's the only non-electric type that can learn thundershock.
Not only are there three of these damn things, but they get less and less creative. It doesn't look like it's evolved so much as it looks like somebody glued random parts to it. It was just a bad idea from the start to make a Pokemon based on machine parts.
MEGA FAIL

  • Name: Shibishirasu
  • Number: 108
  • Type: Electric
  • Species: Electric Eel Pokemon
  • Looks like: a tiny eel/leech/sperm cell
  • Awesome factor: 5/10
  • Trivia: Its evolutionary family has no weaknesses due to the "levitate" ability which negates it's only weakness, ground types.
I'm not sure why this guy has a diamond (or x) shaped mouth, but it certainly is an adorable little thing. It has an organ which generates electricity, and I'm not sure if its opaque or not, but I like to think that yellow line is that organ. It also kind of reminds me of a sperm cell. Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing is up for debate. I'm not sure why this guy isn't also a water type because he's clearly based on an aquatic creature, but it has no weaknesses which is a major plus.
WIN

  • Name: Shibibiru
  • Number: 109
  • Type: Electric
  • Species: Electric Fish Pokemon
  • Looks like: a lamprey
  • Awesome factor: 6/10
  • Trivia: It's the first Pokemon since the original 151 to evolve via thunderstone. It's the only one of its family to learn moves by leveling up (the other two have a predetermined moveset...?).
If I didn't know they were related, I probably would not make the connection between Shibibiru and Shibishirasu. They don't look much alike. Shibibiru has a completely different coloration and resembles a lamprey more than an eel. Still, it's a nice looking design and those vertical fins, which I'm not usually a fan of, give it character. Though the game outright says he's a fish, Shibibiru still lacks the water type. Go figure.
WIN

  • Name: Shibirudon
  • Number: 110
  • Type: Electric
  • Species: Electric Fish Pokemon
  • Looks like: they went a bit overboard
  • Awesome factor: 4/10
  • Trivia: n/a
The evolutionary link is obvious this time, but they went way overboard as these Pokemon designers tend to do with third form evolutions. They extended the fin on the head, removed the one on the neck, added one to the tail along with two "pads", made the teeth external, and added two goofy looking arms. Honestly, if the arms were gone I'd probably bump him up to a seven, but they just look to damn stupid and out of place. They completely ruined this guy by doing that. Fortunately, Shibibiru won't evolve unless you make him which means you don't have to ruin the nice design. Plus, this guy won't learn any moves by leveling up for some reason.
